An explanatory note

I'm considering transitioning my blog from my prior blogging application (the twit friendly Tumblr), to this more serious platform. I'm going to give things the old college try on here and see how things work. One way or another, the finished product will be at www.whenitstrikesme.com.

For the time being, I'm going to be transitioning some archived posts over here to see how they look and whatnot and determine if this is the way I want to go.

SEC Power Poll: Week 12

Once again, this week's SaveTheShield.com SEC Power Poll Entry is a true collaborative effort. STS's Philip took the first crack and I filled in some of the gaps. Look for the final results when Team Speed Kills releases them on Wednesday morning.

1. Alabama

The Crimson Tide beat a team named after pieces of Native American footwear. That just doesn't impress us.

2. Florida

The only thing that could have made this game worth watching would be if Isiah Thomas decided to coach the FIU football team too. Yawn.

3. Ole Miss

Ah, bittersweet November: the Month Houston Nutt ponders what might have been, had he not made such a hash out of September and October (also the month his texting thumb's arthritis starts acting up in the cold).

4. LSU

We heard that Les Miles really meant to accept the Michigan Job. He just couldn't get back to them before time ran out.

Quotably Spammed

Let it be known across the lands that Verizon's .net email accounts have the absolute worst spam filter known to man. And what's up with only being able to block 100 addresses as permaspam? Ugh, time to start transitioning friends to my gmail account.
- Me, after spending too much damn time cleaning my frigging inbox.

Random Story

One of my favorite stories from this past weekend traveling South for a wedding was told by a current professor at an SEC West football superpower.
When I asked him if he'd ever been pressured by the football superstructure or by friends regarding players he taught in his freshman level lectures, he laughed and said the only pressure he ever got was from friends who wanted him to flunk a particularly porous offensive lineman who somehow managed to start.
Gotta love the passion of football fans... and the ethics of the professor (who gave him the grade he earned).

My Jack Handy Moments: Flying

Do you ever stop to think of just how ridiculous flying jets are? I mean really, you're in an over pressurized, aluminum tube that is hyper-oxygenated and pumped full of high octane fuel. You are then propelled by friggin' jet engines at 40,000 feet.

And that's a safer way to travel than walking down Lexington Avenue.

Crazy.

My new Addiction is the Gym

I suppose it's certainly healthier than my past addictions to smoking and pizza. But I honestly don't feel good unless I get 90 minutes at the gym each night. I do it late, so I always wake up feeling wiped out, and yet never feel like I've quite worked out enough.

Part of the interesting element of my addiction is that it has a side effect (beyond losing weight) of watching a ton of TV. I purchased a DVD player and utilized my Netflix queue to get through multiple TV series while on the elliptical trainer. Right now, I'm wrapping up the BBC miniseries State of Play and have recently torn through Generation Kill, Torchwood, Firefly, Damages, Deadwood, Mad Men and a series of movies. I've also re-watched a couple of the seasons of The Wire that I own. So I imagine I'll use this journal to provide my thoughts on them as I wrap them up.

Another side effect has been the unfulfilling purchase of fitness gadgetry. It never seems to work out: be it dumbbells I rarely use at home (though I thank Amazon Prime for ridiculously letting me ship those for free), that chin-up bar that doesn't work on any of my door frames (but I still use as a push-up bar occasionally), the FitBit that I'm still waiting for word on when it will ship (and will review once I get it) and the Vibram Five Fingers that I actually love, but ordered just before it got cold and wet.

First Post and SEC Power Poll

I haven't really figured out what I want to do with this just yet. Likely I'll just use it as a journal to write whatever I'm thinking or what I enjoy. In the meantime, I'm going to cross post my SEC Power Poll Ballot from Save The Shield for Team Speed Kills. Here's this week's (SEC Week 8 Power Poll final results are here @ Team Speed Kills):
